Day 240 - Wormholes

Let's move on to a new design on the project. Recently I looked back at Fossil Bed and realized that this design had loads of potential variations just waiting to be stitched!

First I played with starting with a closed spiral and quilting off with a tail of stacked half-moon shapes. After looking at the resulting texture, I realized that this looks a lot like the wormholes from Dr. Who:

As you can see in the photo above when you stack half-moon shapes together they really give off a very interesting texture!

There are also two possible variations of this design. You can easily swap out the half-moon shapes for Overlapping Petals or stitch it with a square spiral and Boomerang to create Spiral Boomerangs for an even more interesting design!

Difficulty Level - Intermediate. This is a really fun design to stitch! First start with a circle and closed spiral. I found it fun to experiment with both closed and open spirals and eventually found that closed spirals (spirals you stitch into and travel stitch back out of) look the best for this design.

Filler Design Type - Stacking. Wormholes is really created by stacking shapes together. First stitch the circle and go inside with the spiral. Then stack a line of half-moon shapes to the back. When you get bored stitching half moon shapes, just stitch another circle, and the design will continue to build quickly and easily!

Directional Texture - All Directions. This is going to be a very eye-catching design because of the thread play created by stacking the Wormhole shapes together.

Suggestions for Use - Personally I think this design will be easier to quilt on a smaller scale because it keeps the half-moon shapes short and easy to curve smoothly.

I also think this texture is so amazing, you should give it some room to really show off, so I'm planning to use it over some large expanses of the background of Sinkhole. Wormholes and Sinkholes - match made in heaven!

  1. Great design, Leah, but I miss Josh's recipe Thursdays. I can't cook with perfectly stitched cotton.

  2. Leah, were SPOT ON with the name of this one. I clicked on the site and my (almost 4 year old - can't read yet) said..."I don't like it. It has worms in it." Of course that was HER personal preference...I do however like it.

Now...let me go see the video on how you made it.

  3. Wormholes looks gorgeous on black. You always do such beautiful work

  4. Wow! I'm so impressed with your machine quilting skills. I am working on my first quilt but doing it by hand - machine quilting is intimidating.
