Day 275 - Ball Bearings

I'm always in search of new echoing designs and variations of Echo Shell. lately I've started squishing multiple designs together to see what happens. This is what happens when you stick half moon shapes inside Echo Shell.

It kind of looks like Ball Bearings!

free motion quilting | Leah DayEh, I know it's late to be posting (8:30 pm here), but there's a good reason for it. Josh and I have been outside in the beautiful sunshine with James digging up the soil in the front yard to lay a brick patio.

Unfortunately I forgot that I hadn't been in the sun much yet this year and got a bit burned on the edges. So for the rest of the afternoon, I've been sitting on the edge of my chair (because my back is crispy) and slathering myself with aloe. Lesson learned, I won't be out again without sunscreen and a hat!

Difficulty Level - Advanced. This design is all about precision more than anything else. Form your Echo Shell with the middle row quite wide, then travel within this area and fill it with arc shapes, making sure to stay within the lines.

Take it slow, maintain a good grip on the quilt, and if you have to, mark the first couple of half circles on your quilt before you get started.

Design Family - Echoing. These designs are simple: create a shape, travel stitch, and echo that shape a set distance around.

This particular design stitches this up a notch by going back inside to fill, but in essence, you're filling your quilt with half circles which can be as large or as small as you like, so this can go in all areas of your quilt.

Directional Texture - All Directions. Circles seem to swirl from all directions with this design so make sure to put it in places that need a lot of attention!

Suggestions for Use - I personally think Ball Bearings will work best on a larger scale over the open, uncomplicated areas of your quilt. This way it will be less stressful trying to fit this design into a small area so you can focus more on creating the half circles and filling them with arcs.

  3. Cool design! I've been wanting to try some Baptist-Fan inspired arcs on my longarm, and this looks do-able. Thank you.
