How to Quilt a Glitter Star Block

It's hard to believe we're quilting our 11th quilt block for the Machine Quilting Block Party. It's been so much fun to quilt along together this year and we just have one more block to go and our Sunshine Surprise quilt will be complete!

I used a wide variety of quilting designs in this block including Zippling and Fuse Fire with lots of straight lines to balance them out. It took a bit longer to quilt this block because I switched from free motion quilting to walking foot quilting and back again. Switching machine quilting styles like this can make the quilting process easier and it's fun to try out many different designs as you'll see in this video:

I really love the effect of this quilt block and the combination of straight line Zippling with flowy Fuse Fire. Contrasting textures like this add a lot of movement to the quilt block, which might be overwhelming if it were not for the rows of parallel straight lines.

Every once and awhile a quilter will email me wishing to stitch something "other than straight lines" with her walking foot. I understand that too much of a good thing isn't a good thing, but never discount the simple beauty of straight line quilting, or the drama it can add to a quilt by giving you space between competing designs.

Now we're nearing the end of this year's Machine Quilting Block Party and you may be wondering what's in store for next year...

So here's a sneak peek!

In 2017 the Machine Quilting Block Party will begin again on January 1st with a new mystery quilt/ This new quilt is called Flower Festival and it's going to be a terrific combination of pieced blocks, a bit of applique, and lots of beautiful quilting!

We will begin Flower Festival on January 1st and it will work exactly like this year with new block patterns released every month and new videos coming out every Monday. I hope you'll quilt along with us for another year and continue building new quilting skills block by block!

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
