Day 268 - Butterfly Feather Flower

It must be Flower Week this week as all I'm sharing are flower designs!

Here's another cool flower inspired by Butterfly Feathers. Stitch them in a circle and you end up with this cool design:

free motion quilting | Leah DayWhoa! We had a CRAZY storm last night. I sat up on the couch until midnight hiding loose threads in Hot Cast while a hot wind swirling around the house.

We have a near wind-tunnel that can blow through the carport with enough force to pull a storm door off it's hinges (ask me how I know). While no doors or windows were damaged, the dead, precariously leaning pine tree in the back finally decided to fall, taking the tops of three of Josh's trees along with it.

I can't get the feeling of that swirling crazy wind blowing through the trees off my mind. I'm needing to design a few new quilts on the theme of Woodlands or Meadows for a challenge this fall, and this may be the perfect inspiration to stop thinking and start working on the design!

Now back to Butterfly Feather Flower:

Difficulty Level - Intermediate. This design isn't difficult, but like Spinning Daisy, it can be tricky to match up the first and last petals together smoothly. When it doubt, mark the starting feathers on your fabric before getting started so there is a smooth connection and no squished or lopsided petals.

Design Family - Center Fill. Starting in the center of your quilting space, this design radiates out to fill the area. I've started this particular flower with a single circle, but you could easily use a large Peppermint Candy spiral, a cluster of Pebbling, or for a cool variation a square filled with Cubing.

Directional Texture - Center Focused. You can't miss the obvious flower shape with this design! It's making me want to get back to all my Flower Bouquet quilts and experiment with a Feathered Flower variation!

Suggestions for Use - There are many popular circle quilt designs that could easily be quilted with flower designs. I ran a google search and came up with this awesome quilt:

Petite Joie shares a Part 1 and Part 2 tutorial of The Circle Quilt, a super cute circle machine applique quilt. Definitely go check out her cheerful, easy to follow instructions on her blog.

I love the simple colors and layout of this quilt! Imagine each circle quilted with a Center Fill flower design and maybe a Pivoting Design like Paisley in the background!

  3. I'm watching this on
April 10 and the video pauses every 5 seconds for at least 5 seconds. I'd sure like to see it all together. I will try again on Monday.
