Day 298 - Star Flower Flow

Many quilters commented on last month's Star Flower design about how this design looked like a Christmas poinsettia. It definitely would be my first choice for a holiday ornament or quilted gift!

But what if we don't want to use this design as a big giant flower? What if we want it to bend and twist around our quilting space? Let's try it again, this time as Star Flower Flow:

While I know it doesn't feel like it right now, Christmas is just around the corner! I'm absolutely terrible about leaving all my Christmas presents to the last minute, then stitching up a fury to get them all done in time.

I keep swearing I'll be different this year, but with another goddess quilt already in the design process, I know I'll be working on that this summer rather than gifts for the holidays.

However, with pretty designs like this Star Flower Flow, I may just change my ways after all!

This design is sponsored by the Ultimate Quilting Kit. This is a collection of the tools I use every single day to make free motion quilting easier on my home sewing machine.

Difficulty Level - Intermediate. This design involves a small amount of travel stitching in the beginning, then mostly echo quilting to finish it off. Echoing is a fundamental technique to free motion quilting and can be challenging to master.

Definitely check out a post coming this week on how to master echo quilting!

Design Family - Echoing. This design is very similar to Dandelion Puff, except this time I travel stitched and echoed the design, rather than pivoting for each echo line. It's a subtle change that makes a slightly different thread texture.

Really both designs could be quilted either way and they're entirely interchangeable. Play with both of them and decide which one works easier for you!

Directional Texture - All Directions. The flowing, swirling flowers really catch your eye with this pretty design. Because the star flowers stand out quite a bit, make sure to place this in an area they can show off beautifully.

Suggestions for Use - Here's a beautiful holiday quilt design: Use Star Flower in the blocks, and Icicle Lights to fill the sashing, and Star Flower Flow in the borders. This combination will look not only look awesome, it will help you learn travel stitching and echoing!
