48. Quilt Spirals in a Sawtooth Star

It's time to free motion quilt another Sawtooth Star, this time with Spirals and more little wiggly U shapes:

I like this combination of designs, and especially how big and bold the spirals look around the star. I like playing with the edge of design - how big can you make one element before it starts to compete with the elements around it?

When quilting this, I decided to knock out my spirals and ditch quilting at the same time, then went back into the star and free motion quilted the wiggly u's and center spiral. Watch how this path works in this video:

Yep, you can still make these blocks and quilt along with all these videos! Click Here to join in the fun by picking up a copy of the Building Blocks Quilt Pattern.

As with all the blocks we've learned this year, there's definitely no single right or wrong way to quilt these blocks. If you'd prefer to start in the center and work outward, that's just fine too!

Josh decided to change things up quite a bit in his block by not quilting the wiggly u's in the star points. Learn why he decided not to do this and see his amazing progress on spirals in this video:

Wow! What amazing progress after quilting 11 blocks! Here's Josh's first spirals for comparison:

Yes, free motion quilting can be learned if only you take the time to actually do it! Josh doesn't know how to piece, couldn't sew a regular seam on this machine if I didn't set it up for him, but he has learned how to free motion quilt through this project. Three cheers for Josh!

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
