Quilt Design with the Quiltrovert

Quiltrovert! I love the name Niki Gordham-Harrison goes by on Instagram. Today she's on the Hello My Quilting Friends podcast and we're talking about how she became a quilter just 8 months ago and is already designing her own quilts and writing patterns.

It's really interesting to see how different quilters get into this wonderful craft. Some quilters instantly begin designing and playing with shapes, while others prefer to follow patterns and not have to worry about the math coming out right.

The thing I love most about our wonderful craft is how amazing it is that so many creative people can be supported by this hobby. From sewing machine dealers to quilt pattern designers, there is enough room for everyone.

I honestly think that the huge size and stability of the quilting industry has a lot to do with how it developed naturally from women sharing ideas from one to another.

Other crafts that I've studied, like glass beadmaking, were once shrouded in mystery and kept secret by powerful guilds that would kill you if you shared information too freely. I think these crafts have suffered from a lack of new ideas and innovation because of their closely guarded secrets.

And you doubt this makes an impact, how many towns in America have glass guilds? How many towns have quilt guilds?

You can bet on just about every sizeable town in America at least having a local quilt bee that gets together on a regular basis to stitch together. That is the power of sharing with an open heart!

I hope you enjoy this interview with Nika. Half of the interview she shared her journey, then I turned the questions over to her so she could ask me about writing patterns and how I approach making a living with quilting.

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
